As if you needed another reason to make fun of the Meatpacking District
Last Thursday we met friends from out of town for dinner. Being out of towners, they made reservations at Son Cubano in the Meatpacking District. As if the location wasn't eye-rollingly abominable enough, upon arriving at the front door, we were stopped by a man who appeared to simply be waiting outside, and who subsquently asked to see some ID.
That's right. Son Cubano, a restaurant, has a bouncer. I've been carded at many a bar in my time, but never have I had to produce my driver's license to enter a dining establishment.
All things being equal, the restaurant actually wasn't horrible, but I'd rather move to Staten Island than spend money on any business located on 14th Street between 9th Avenue and Washington Street ever again.

i agree. i was taken to buddha-bar for dinner last week and was beyond underwhelmed (ok, the sushi was good, but the entree was just eh at best). then the waitress came over to tell my friend and i that she had been watching us eat with chopsticks and how difficult and odd it must be for us since we are both left-handed.
thanks for this little review!
I'm heading to the City for my friend's bachelorette party in a couple weeks and she wanted to eat here. I was able to talk her out of it cause its so out of the way from our hotel (we are staying at the Marriot Marquis on Broadway)but now i can tell her we really arent missing out on much!
I thought you didn't travel west of 5th avenue?
Nonetheless, MePa blows at night. fucking ridiculous.
Son Cubano is a fun place, with good (not great) food and drinks and actually one of the least pretentious in MePa. The reason for the bouncer is that they turn into a club after 11p and they are trying to prevent underage drinkers. It also is for crowd control as the place gets packed on weekends. Its easier to card at the door then at the bar. They should be commended for caring about their patrons and trying to stop underage drinking in light of recent incidents where drunk, underage women end up dead after partying in Manhattan as well as curbing dangerous overcrowding. I also work with one of the bouncers at his day job and he is a gentle giant so lighten up on someone working 2 jobs to feed a wife and kids.
