Thank you, Debra LaFave

I wrote "Living out every teenage boy's fantasy" way back in the early stages of this blog in July 2004. It was only my 11th post, back when I thought bolding certain words and phrases would make whatever I was discussing funny. Apparently this was such a successful practice that was the last time I did it.

Anyway, this blog has come a long way since then, but that Debra LaFave-inspired post to this day is routinely read by more people than anything else I've penned. People will occasionally post random comments, leading me to chuckle to myself "wow, there are still people who give a shit about this woman." (Seriously, for a good laugh, check out the comments section of that post. It's at 47 and counting. People are fucking insane! Some of the comments are even in Spanish!)

Then I noticed yesterday that I was getting far more comments than normal on that old post, and upon doing a quick Google search I figured out why: Debra LaFave was finally sentenced and managed to skate off without an ounce of jail time; and I am the ninth-most relevant result when one Googles "Debra LaFave." I imagine once Google caches her sentencing stories I will be bumped off the front page, but given that I received over 12,000 distinct visitors yesterday (easily a site record) and the majority of those users were searching for Debra LaFave, I'm going to bask in this mayhem for at least a little while longer.

Throughout all this craziness, I've barely had a moment to register an opinion on the sentencing. Let's see - an attractive, 23-year-old high school teacher has an affair with her 14-year-old student. Once word gets out, the teacher gets arrested and put on trial. The kid can now brag for the rest of his life that he fucked the hot teacher, and the teacher ultimately gets a mere slap on the wrist. I'd say both parties came out of this relatively unscathed.

Hmm, do you think if the genders were reversed that a male teacher would've gotten off with three years house arrest? I briefly discussed gender bias in yesterday's post, and it's interesting to see what happens when the shoe's on the other foot.

Debra LaFave, scot-free, and just in time for Thanksgiving, too. As long as my site stats keep getting jacked up and I manage to grab at least a handful of you sex-starved maniacs as return readers, I sure as hell know what I'm thankful for.
