Cue sad "Charlie Brown Christmas" music as you dolefully hang your head
Not that this is surprising in the least, but it still completely fucking sucks -"R.I.P. 'Arrested Development'" [via EW]
There's no other show like "Arrested" on TV, and this is a tremendous loss for the apparently small segment of people in this country who have brains. I can only hope that after Fox finally gives the show the axe we either see another "Family Guy"-like resurrection or some sharp network snaps it up.

I think this is one of the worst things that has ever occurred in the United States. Screw the 2004 election, 9/11, all that -- this is an out-and-out tragedy.
I think Gene Parmesan may have been able to save the show. At least that's my take over on my little rag today:

Family Guy was better off dead. That way it couldn't start to suck. Like Jimi Hendrix, Arrested will die without a blemish on its record. And I don't have to tell you to look at the Simpsons, a show that should have bowed out 10, that's right 10, years ago. Instead its legacy is now one of mediocrity and self referencing it's own long forgotten heyday.
In the end it's probably for the best, because we'll only have good episodes of Arrested.
I see your point Pete, but Christ, the show produced what, 40-something episodes? And it seemed to be getting even better (if that's possible) this current season.
Sure it's a nice footnote that there will never be shitty episodes, but it doesn't change the fact that it still sucks that there won't be any new ones. There's not one other show on TV right now anywhere near the comedic level "Arrested" was operating on.
What a strange way to react to the death of your favorite show...
I haven't been this heartbroken about the cancellation of a TV program since they nixed My So Called Life right when I was in the prime demographic for the show.
I wonder what will become of the alleged "Fake David Cross"? Will his schtick remain relevant once the show is demoted to DVD? Only time, and naive East Village girls, will tell.
I wish I could be optimistic about AD returning Family Guy-style, but keep in mind that Family Guy's first incarnation was before the DVD box set market hit its stride. Fox is making this decision despite the DVD sales and the huge backing on the internet. Though how American Dad or The War At Home manage to survive is beyond me.
But yeah, this is like knowing that a breakup is coming but you're still crushed. So sad that there won't be a Motherboy XXXI.
Petroleum, I don't necessarily agree with the Jimi analogy...these guys didn't even get a chance to play the National Anthem at Woodstock or make white women cream in their panties yet.
They were just hitting their comedic prime, they weren't even there yet. This is like if the Grateful Dead broke up in 1968 (not sure if you guys are music fans, but the analogy's apt).
There hasn't been a non-animated show with such a hysterical emsemble cast like this one in years, you don't just go and cancel a show like that. I suggested a while ago that they should just move it to F/X. Someone said the costs might be to high, but can they really be higher than The Shield?
It just makes no sense to cancel this show right now. I'm heartbroken.
Hopefully FX, or better yet HBO, will pick it up. AD on HBO might be the greatest thing to ever happen. Considering HBO's Curb is only pulling in 1M viewers a week (compared to Arrested's 4M), it would make sense for them to scoop it up.
Fox has made the littlest huge mistake. Those blowhards at FOX should suck up a chubby.
Pete- I contend that Family Guy is still a solid hit, definitely not better off dead. Plus, AD was nowhere near experiencing anything similar to the situation with The Simpsons by continuing their run on Fox. They could have had another solid 5 years before even being legitimately compared. Also, shouldn't that be the beauty of a well-written show? That it can continue to make us laugh and satisfy us despite running out of ideas? Just look at Seinfeld. I definitely will miss AD.
Not to be a whore, but I get less of a thrill this season than last season. The characters seem too aware of their own absurdity. I mean, this is still better than any network sitcom. It'd fit well with HBO's style, and HBO could afford the production cost.
