In line with my unabashed love of that most-amazing-yet-ridiculously-underappreciated of musical genres, power-pop, comes what may well be the top album of the year. Yellow Second's "Altitude" is the quintessential summer record - insanely catchy tunes, stellar vocals of both the lead and backing variety, minor chords out the ass - leaving one with a general sense of carefree astonishment that every album isn't this amazing, while effortlessly catching the tone and feel of a beautiful summer day.Matt Thiessen of Relient K pretty much sums it up perfectly:
"Yellow Second's originality and melodic sensibility will continue to influence those that make and listen to music. P.S. I could listen to the track 'Silhouette' a zillion times back to back."
He's Goddamn right. Those la-la backing vocals in "Silhouette's" coda have been in my head for a week straight.
So far every damn track on this album has woven its way into my brain, and I don't want them to leave. If you like music, you won't be disappointed.
Unless you like Indie rock - then you'll probably be disappointed, because you hate catchy and melodic songs for some inexplicable reason.

As a fan of power pop I am going on your say so and getting this cd. Just wondering if you've heard of a band called Click Five-given a few good power pop reviews. You probably know that Big Star is releasing a new album next month-1/2 Big Star 1/2 Posies.
Also I rode the subway today and thought of your recent rant on subways. Crowded train-one seat empty right next to a woman eating some finger lickin' good fried chicken. What possesses people to do this.
Thanks for the heads-up - I have not heard of Click Five but will definitely look into 'em.
I did read about Big Star's new record, although admittedly am a bit hesitant when old acts try to regroup and release new albums.
Nice to see there are other power-pop fans out there. If you have any other recommendations I'd love to hear 'em. Feel free to drop me a line - editor@thisiswhatwedonow.com.
Just started reading your blog (and NYC blogs in general since I'm relocating from Boston next week) and just have to say - POWER POP?? That's my bread-n-butter! Not familiar with Yellow Second but you can bet I will look in to them. How about Ash for some great summer power pop, particularly their previous album Free All Angels?
For TRUE powerpop, you can't beat the Raspberries or the Rubinoos. Both old school, but this the real deal. I am getting this record on your recommendation, by the way!
Wow, I'm flattered you guys are picking up this album based on my recommendation! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have; come by and let me know.
