Ranking the women of the free dailies

I pick up AM "Believe it or not, this newspaper is actually produced by a group of functioning adults" New York and Metro every day, not because either is a particularly good read (although Metro is clearly superior), but mostly out of force of habit as well as a deep-seated hatred of not having anything to read while traveling, and both rags are perfect for a quick train ride.

One curious thing I noticed about Metro is that they recently began running headshots of a select few members of their writing staff. This is certainly far from uncommon, as many newspapers run photos of their opinion columnists and more esteemed staffers. Hell, my first order of business as editor in chief of The Brown and White two years ago was to run headshots of all the opinion columnists. Obviously my ulterior motive was to broadcast my mug to the masses, but the idea was popular enough that they still do it to this day.

What caught my eye regarding Metro is that they don't reserve photos for just the opinion writers; seemingly half the staff gets face time. Even more interesting was that the majority of Metro's employees seem to be female, begging the question: are these women subconsciously (or even consciously) trying to get their face out there, on the chance that guys will notice them and possibly even pursue them? Granted, this is a very Larry way of thinking, but I don't think a woman in a serious relationship would bother ensuring her face gets seen by tens of thousands of people on a daily basis without some sort of expectation.

So I've decided to take the liberty of ranking the women of the free dailies, who are, for the most part, a pretty attractive bunch. Maybe I'm biased, but I tend to have a thing for women in journalism.

Mina Hochberg

Mina is AMNY's gossip columnist, which means she regurgitates yesterday's Page Six, Rush & Molloy and Gawker. You can't really tell much by the above picture, but Mina looks like she could be decently cute, plus she's got a Jappy last name, so that's a big bonus in my book.

Alexandra Morra

Alexandra wrote something in last week's AMNY, although I don't think she's a regular columnist. Again, this picture doesn't exactly do her justice, but she's exuding some serious sexuality in this sultry black and white pic.

Dorothy Robinson

Dorothy's pigtails scream girl-next-door, but you can tell there's a rebel just dying to bust out. Her eyes and slight grin are what grabbed me here, and I also enjoy her writing in Metro's entertainment section as well as the unfortunately seemingly now-departed brilliant "Blog of The Day" feature.

Amy Zimmer #1

Amy Zimmer #2

Ah, Amy, the Queen of the Free Dailies. Amy clearly cares about how she appears to the masses, as she recently took an updated picture to reflect her new hairstyle. I can't quite put my finger on it, but Amy was the impetus behind this stupid blog post, and I just think she's adorable.

So there you have it - the women of the free dailies. Not a bad lot; probably more attractive than most other industries combined, maybe with the exception of PR. Alexandra definitely strikes me as the bad girl of the bunch, but at the end of the day, I'd be more than happy to come home to Ms. Zimmer.

You just reminded me of an article that made its way around the newsroom at work:

"A survey into which careers are considered the most attractive by members of the opposite sex shows that women working in journalism are what every right-thinking professional man desires."

And women want doctors (no surprise there.)
