A free daily that doesn't suck

I've spent so much time bashing AM New York that I've neglected the city's vastly superior free daily, Metro.

I'd gotten so used to picking up AMNY because their hawkers have been omnipresent at every subway station I use, but after being alerted of the existence of a terrific little feature Metro runs in the top righthand corner of the "Your Day" section called "Blog of the Day," I've been grabbing a copy every morning.

Metro only improved their standing in my eyes after selecting Winner of the SAT a little while back, and have continued their excellent taste in blogs by pimping Spinach Dip today. Big ups to both bloggas - I'd say something about the mainstream media sweating blogs, but there ain't much skin left on that mare's carcass.

A belated thanks for the shout.

I'd read Metro too but the box near my subway stop is empty more often than not. Still, I don't trust the free dailies. Why are they giving it away? What's the catch? There is no such thing as a free paper, says the cynic in me.
