This Is What We Do Now

Someone must pay for these God-awful Ford commercials

I hate 99% of commercials. It’s nigh-impossible to sit through any of my favorite TV shows without groaning or eye-rolling a dozen times, and it continually boggles my mind that the entire staff of Taco Bell’s advertising division hasn’t been shitcanned yet.

T-Bell isn’t the only offender, but they have seriously had one of the most annoying ad campaigns in recent memory. “I’m full!”? Yea, full of internal bleeding after I beat you senseless.

Additionally, what the hell is up with Burger King? They’ve gone through at least three campaigns in less than a year. First it was “Whopperheads,” followed by the hideously creepy “Wake up with the King” ads in which some random guy acts remarkably calm upon finding that he’s woken up next to a ridiculous-looking oversized burger “King,” and finally the slightly less cringe-inducing office spots with “The Soup’s” Joel McHale. I’d single out the latest Hootie ads, but those can probably be filed under “Wake up with the King” or “the Darius Rucker Memorial Bankruptcy Fund.”

Which brings me to Ford. Car commercials are usually too easy a target to pick on, but way to go and alienate every single person in the country, Ford. A talking car that whines in the most annoying-ass voice ever conceived? Great idea guys, I’m sure the masses will be flocking to Ford dealerships, but it definitely won’t be to purchase your shite cars. It “begs to be driven?” Sure, driven into a nuclear reactor.

Funny you mention that, we've been working on getting DVR, but none of my lazy roommates have bothered calling for it yet.

Then again, there'd be significantly less to make fun of on TV without commercials. Not that regular TV doesn't provide ample opportunity, but man is it satisfying to know you can outperform the shit out of a Madison Avenue ad exec's job.

Quite the dilemma.

Well considering the fact that they have you bothered enough to fully remember their specific campaigns and commercials...seems like they've done what they came to do.

Hence, the cononudrum with commercials. Annoying commercials stick in your head. However, they don't inspire brand loyalty. I sure remember the name Ford, but I equate it with annoying cars.

Doesn't really matter. They've annoyed you enough to encourage you to spread word of mouth. Your hateful words may inspire someone to go check out Ford and they may, in turn, love it. It's a dirty dirty trick they've played...

Oh no, the corporations have won! You mean negative press is better than no press at all? Wow, I had no idea!

Sarcasm aside, I'm fully aware that blogging about these commercials, even in a negative tone, is still a way to generate buzz for the products. Hey, if someone goes out and buys a Ford Focus just to spite me, more power to 'em.

Still doesn't make these ads any less annoying, and I'm still going to make fun of them with my "hateful" words. "Hateful," huh? I didn't realize ads had feelings.

I found the "Wake Up With the King" ads were vaguely tantalizing, actually. I mean, the King has got to be better than the Hamburgler or Grimace, right? Because, like, he's the King... who wouldn't want to wake up next to the King.

I'm going to go take my sedative now.
